Battery Services

About JET Environmental Services, Inc.

JET Environmental Services, Inc. is an international battery consulting and logistics company headquartered in the United States, serving clients in more than 70 oil- and gas-producing countries. For over 25 years, we have delivered full lifecycle services for lithium batteries—covering storage, handling, use, and end-of-life management at warehouses, laboratories, workshops, rig sites, and offshore vessels.

The use of lithium batteries continues to expand in the oil services and downhole industries. While lithium-ion batteries are emerging, the industry still relies heavily on lithium metal chemistries such as thionyl chloride and sulfuryl chloride for LWD, MWD, GWD, subsea, buoy, memory, and other applications. Demand for these high-temperature cells is rising as operators increase activity in deeper and hotter wells.

Because of these operational realities, employees, vessel operators, and even client personnel may be exposed to the unique hazards of lithium batteries. JET provides the training, auditing, permitting, and field services needed to mitigate these risks.

Tiered Lithium Battery Training

JET Environmental Services offers multiple levels and scopes of of training to establish and maintain an effective battery safety program:

  1. Awareness
  2. Packaging
  3. Technician Safety
  4. Battery Safety Officer (BSO)

Our training programs are widely recognized as the industry standard for lithium battery handlers and users in oil services and downhole applications. We work with each client to identify compliance requirements and then customize training accordingly.

  • Course Length: From 30 minutes to three days
  • Delivery: Onsite (in multiple languages) or online (English and Spanish, with live interpretation available in French, Portuguese, Russian, and others)
  • BSO Curriculum: A two-day program covering classroom learning, regulatory frameworks, and packaging demonstrations, culminating in certification

Lithium Battery Management and Permits

Every comprehensive lithium battery program begins with a written corporate standard covering all chemistries. JET develops guidelines and manuals for complete lifecycle management, including storage, handling, use, and end-of-life disposal.

We specialize in permit and liaison services for shipments of lithium metal batteries, which are often regulated under the OECD Transboundary Movement Rules and the Basel Convention. Our services include:

  • Direct engagement with local agencies to expedite permitting
  • In-country representation to manage compliance obligations
  • Facility visits to bases or consolidation points as required

Field Work and Packaging

JET provides on-site field and packaging services, including emergency response readiness and testing standby support. Services are quoted per our standard rate schedule and may include:

  • Deployment of field services managers or in-country representatives
  • Retrieval, packaging, labeling, and preparation of batteries for shipment
  • Logistics coordination with transport partners, including base-to-ship operations
  • Provision of JET field personnel when no qualified local providers are available

Post-Incident Cleanup and Emergency Response

Lithium battery incidents require specialized expertise. JET can rapidly deploy project managers and technical field staff to supervise cleanup operations following fires, leaks, or other incidents. Our global reach allows us to mobilize to virtually any country on short notice.

Auditing and Compliance

Practical, standards-based auditing is a cornerstone of safe lithium battery management. JET audits facilities for compliance with storage, use, handling, and testing protocols. We also audit third-party vendors—including transport companies, warehouses, and recycling partners—to verify compliance with both regulatory frameworks and corporate standards.

Auditing may reference:

  • UN 38.3 transport testing standards
  • IEC 62133 / 62619
  • US DOT / 49 CFR Hazardous Materials Regulations
  • IATA DGR and IMDG Code
  • Basel Convention and OECD transboundary rules
  • UL standards (e.g., 1642, 2054)

Recycling and Disposal

JET assists clients in selecting recycling and disposal solutions for end-of-life lithium batteries. We maintain strong relationships with processors in the United States, Canada, Germany, and other regions that utilize proprietary technologies for recovery and recycling.

Additionally, JET audits alternate facilities to ensure suitability, verifying that their processes align with both regulatory obligations and client corporate standards.
