- USDOT: Anyone who packs, labels, or ships lithium batteries needs function-specific hazmat training, refreshed at least every 3 years (49 CFR 172.704).
- Fire code: NFPA 855 (2026 edition) requires an emergency response plan and a training program for stationary energy storage. Your local fire code decides which edition applies to you.
- USEPA: End-of-life batteries fall under universal waste rules (40 CFR 273), which include employee training.

Level 1: Hazard Awareness Training
Length: 30 minutes to 2 hours

You’ll learn:
- How lithium batteries fail (thermal runaway, off-gassing, swelling)
- Warning signs of a damaged or overheating battery

- What to do and who to call in a fire, leak, or spill
Level 2: Technical and Packaging Training
Length: 8 hours (1 day)
For: Staff who receive, store, install, remove, or ship lithium batteries
You’ll learn:
- Battery classification, UN numbers, and Class 9 marking and labeling
- Packaging for ground and air shipment
- Handling damaged, defective, and recalled batteries
- UN 38.3 test summaries and when you need them
- Safe practices for your operation:
- Oil services: tool assembly, installation, testing, and teardown
- Data centers: UPS module replacement, BESS rack service, and decommissioning
- Technology, defense, and aerospace: battery integration, lab and test-bench handling, and shipping prototype and pre-production batteries
- Spill cleanup and emergency response
- Universal waste rules for end-of-life batteries
Level 3: Advanced Lithium Battery Training
Length: 2-3 days
Certification: JET Battery Safety Officer (BSO)
Level 3 prepares participants to serve as a Battery Safety Officer or site coordinator for lithium batteries. This course is required to earn JET’s BSO certification. It also suits:
