JET moves end-of-life lithium batteries and other regulated materials across borders for recycling. We handle the permits, the paperwork, and the agency contacts so your shipment gets from your site to an approved recycler.
We support clients in more than 70 countries, with offices in the United States and Canada and partners in South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia.
Who We Work With
- Oil services: Field bases that need to export spent lithium metal batteries from countries with no local recycling
- Battery manufacturers and BESS integrators: Companies returning production scrap, failed cells, warranty returns, and recalled batteries from overseas customers and project sites
- Aerospace and defense: Companies returning failed, prototype, or end-of-life batteries from overseas sites
- Data centers: Operators retiring UPS and BESS batteries at sites in multiple countries
Transboundary Movement
Most countries regulate cross-border shipments of waste batteries under the Basel Convention, OECD rules, or both. Each shipment needs written consent from the export, import, and any transit countries before it moves.
JET manages the full process:
| Step | What We Do |
|---|---|
| Notification | Prepare and file export notifications |
| Consents | Obtain consent from the import country and any transit countries |
| Permits | Secure national import and export permits |
| Documentation | Match permits, shipping papers, and customs records |
| Tracking | Follow the shipment to the recycler and close out movement documents |
On-the-Ground Support
Some agencies only move when someone shows up. When needed, JET staff or in-country partners:
- Walk permits through agencies in person if needed
- Meet with environmental and customs officials
- Visit bases and consolidation points to inspect and prepare shipments
Customs Holds and Detentions
Waste battery shipments can get held at the border when customs questions the paperwork or the intent of the shipment. We work with your broker to answer customs questions, provide supporting documents, and get the shipment released.
Why JET
We’ve worked with environmental and customs authorities around the world for more than 25 years. Those relationships help when a permit stalls or a shipment gets stuck.
